Background Information: The Essence Of Colonoscopy

Background Information: The Essence of Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a a procedure carried that enables doctors, Gastroenterology in particular, to examine and evaluate the inside of the colon, which is the inner lining of the large intestine. Colonoscopy is helpful in analysis of the colon and discovering any tumors, ulcers, colon polyps, and areas of bleeding or inflammation. This form of endoscopic examination is an excellent source of discovering harmful content in the colon and saving the lives of those with colon related illnesses.
Colonoscopy is usually carried out on individuals above the ages of 45.
Currently, colonoscopy is carried out with the use of a colonoscope. The colonoscope consists of a fiber optic camera or a CCD camera (Charged Couple Device camera) mounted on a flexible tube with a light source to enhance visualization of the contents of the colon. While the patient is under a form of unconsciousness or consciousness, the colonoscope is passed into the anus and moved slowly and carefully throughout the colon. The colonoscope is able to get a clear visualization of the contents of the inner lining of the membrane. The current method of colonoscopy is safe, efficient in identifying abnormalities and a time efficient procedure. Despite these many advantages, the current method of colonoscopy is painful, requires too much preparation and isn't very effective in getting a good visual of all the areas of the large intestine.
Our engineering design project, Pneumatic and Magnetic Colonoscopy Machine, aims to develop a safe, efficient and comfortable method of colonoscopy with the use of air supply and magnetism. As our project progresses, we will analyze the best way to incorporate these key mechanisms, air supply and magnetism, to develop a new colonoscope model that can be used for commercial use.
